Ferris Valentine was born on June 22, 1891 to James D. and Sarah A. (Schuyler) in Madison County Indiana as the family Bible states though many family trees and other resources state it was Jun 22, 1890. James and Sarah had ten children; Otis A (1871), Esta (1873), Christena (1876), Iona (1878-1880), Kathryn (1881), Dane ((1885), Earl ( 1886), Infant Son (1889-1889), Ferris (1890 or 1891), Gretta (1894).

In the 1900 Federal Census, Ferris is 9 years old and living with his parents in Green Township, Madison County, Indiana with five siblings, Otis, Kate, Dane, Earl and Gretta. In the 1910 Federal Census, Ferris and Gretta are the two remaining children living with James and Sarah. Ferris married Rosella Gertrude Flowers on September 23, 1911 in Madison County, Indiana. In a 1916 Directory for Anderson Indiana, Ferris and his wife Rosa are listed in Green Township. On Ferris’s 1917 Draft registration for WWI, he list his address as; R. R. #40, Pendleton, Indiana and his birthday is June 22, 1890. He is married and the sole provider for his wife. Her name is not listed. He is of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair, not bald or disabled. His draft registration was June 5, 1917.

By the 1920 Federal Census, Ferris and Rosella have one son; (Melvin) Carroll who is age two. Ferris lists farming as his occupation. He lives next door to his father and mother; James and Sarah Valentine. In the 1930 Federal Census, Ferris is listed with his wife, Rosa and a 12 year old Son (Melvin) Carroll. They still live in Green Township, Madison County, Indiana. In 1935 Directory for Pendleton, Indiana, Ferris and Rosa are listed in Lapel, R 1, Green Township. In all of the directories thru 1943, they are listed at the same address. On Ferri’ss World War II registration, his occupation is listed as Self-employed Farmer who resides with his wife, Rosa Valentine, in Lapel at R.R. # 1, Green Township, Madison County, Indiana.

FERRIS VALENTINE, 68, DIES FRIDAY

PENDLETON – Ferris Valentine, 68, RR 1, Lapel, died Friday morning at his farm home southeast of Lapel. Valentine was born in Madison County on June 22, 1890, and was the son of James and Sarah Schuyler Valentine. He had spent his entire life in this vicinity.


Surviving are: the widow, Rose G. Flowers Valentine; a son, Carroll, RR 1, Lapel; three grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Dana Adams, RR 1, Pendleton, and Mrs. Christine Wiseman, Lapel.

The body was taken to the Cornell Bright Funeral Home here where friends are being received.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with burial in the Grove Lawn Cemetery at Pendleton.

Ferris Valentine is buried in Grove Lawn Cemetery in Pendleton, Indiana.
