Tombstone Tuesday – January 29, 2019 – Charles Harvey Hedger

Charles Harvey was the son of Abraham and Cynthia (George) Hedger born in Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana on June 17, 1875. Abraham and Cynthia had two sons; Charles (1878) and John (1879). In the 1880 Federal Census, Abraham, Cynthia and their two sons live in White River Township, Hamilton County, Indiana. By the 1900 Federal Census, Charles is a twenty two year old farm laborer who lives in Green Township, Hancock County Indiana. He is living with and working for Thomas Franklin and his wife, Mahala.

On April, 17, 1906, Charles married Cora Alice Smith in Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana. In the 1910 Federal Census, Charles and Cora are living in Falls Creek, Madison County, Indiana. They have one son whose name is Harold. He is three years old. Charles is a wagon driver who delivers coal according to the census.

On September 12, 1918, Charles registered for the draft for WWI. He lists his birthday as June 18, 1873. That is different than the June 17, 1876 which is listed on his death certificate. He states that his occupation is farming and dairying. He registered with the Falls Creek Township Registor. He stated that he is tall, slender and has brown eyes and gray hair. He had no disabilities.

By the 1920 Census, Charles and Cora are living in Pendleton, Madison County.Indiana. It appears that he maybe a dairyman who delivers milk. They still only have one son, Harold who is now thirteen years old. In the 1930 Census, They remain in Pendleton, Indiana and Charles is a truck driver who is self employed. In the 1940 Federal Census, Charles is a sixty three year old truck driver. He and Cora still live in Pendleton, Indiana.

Seventy Five years ago today, January 29, 1944, Charles Harvey Hedger died. It appears that he had a heart attach but had chronic Nephritis which was a contributing factor. Charles Hedger is buried in Mendon Cemetery south of Pendleton, Indiana.
