Tombstone Tuesday – June 19, 2018 – Charles Henry Overly


Charles Henry Overly was born on August 22, 1888 in Marshall, Indiana. He was the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Jane (Ward) Overly. Jeremiah and Elizabeth had four children; William F. (1879), Bertha (1882), Charles Henry (1888), Edna Lee (1891).

Charles Henry married Grace H. Fouts on January 27, 1909 in Richland Towship, Miami County, Indiana. In the 1910 Federal Census, Charles and Grace are found in Jefferson township, Miami County, Indiana. Charles was a self employed farmer. Charles and Grace had their first daughter in 1914. They names her Elma Lavaughn (Lee). They remain in roughly the same area in the 1920 Federal Census, Charles, Grace and Lavaughn live in the town of Chili in Richland Township, Miami County, Indiana. Elizabeth Mae was born in 1923. In the 1930 Federal Census, Charles, Grace and their daughters are living in Waltz, Wabash County, Indiana. Charles list his occupation as Farmer once again in the Federal Census 1930. Graces’ sister, Cora Fouts appears to be living with them. Grace died May 14, 1934 of what was listed on her death Certificate as a Cerebral Hemorrhage. She had been sick for three weeks with influenza .

On November 16, 1939, Charles married Evelyn M Cattin. They are living in Erie, Indiana in the 1940 Federal Census.  Charles and Evelyn had one son, David C Overly born on July 12, 1941. A 1942 registration for the draft for WWII, indicated that Charles and his wife Evelyn were living in Wabash County, Indiana in the township of Lagro.

Forty nine years ago today, Charles Henry died at the age of eighty years old in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. The following is an obit published in the Kokomo Tribune,

Charles H. Overly

Peru — Charles H. Overly, 80, Wabash Route 2, formerly of Miami County died 6:30 a.m. Thursday in a Logansport hospital after a three-year illness.

Born in Marshall County, Aug. 22, 1888, he was the son of Jeremiah G. and Eliza Jane (Ward) Overly. He was married to Grace Fouts, who died in 1934.He was married Nov. 17, 1939 to Evelyn Cattin, who survives.

Other survivors are one son Charles David Overly, Peru; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil Clupper, Wabash, and Mrs. Marion Clark, Peru; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Overly moved from Miami County to Wabash County 30 years ago. He was a retired farmer and former employee of the Wabash County Farm.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Eddingfield Mortuary, Wabash, with the Rev. J. C. White officiating. Burial will be in the Chili Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home at any time.

He was buried in family plot in Chili Cemetery.
